I took the Texes Social Studies Composite 8-12 on July 9 and passed it the first time out with a 267. It was difficult, but not imposible. I believe that teacher resources are the key to passing. I passed the History 6- 12 Excet on the first try with an 80 using teacher resources. Don't get me wrong, I studied about 4 hours per day for a month before the test. Make sure you don't just study World History, World Geography, U.S. History, Government and Economics. You need to study Sociology also. T are some od state teacher resources online.

Dear test takers: As a certificied social studies composite teacher, with 9 years of teaching experience, I suggest to you all to simply read, learn and memorize most of the Texas adopted high school books. (W. Geography, U.S. History, World History, U.S. Government, and Economics) It took me about one month to read each book. (about 1 chapter per day, more or less). I honestly love these books because they only contain the most important stuff. I will as far to say that they are my favorite books I have ever read. With these books, I always practice my memory. Even when I have free time, I review them. These books made it easier for me to pass the ExCET and then obtain my Master's Degree. For comments, feel free to e-mail me at eduardo4c@hotmail.com . Good luck to you all. You will never regret to be certified in social studies composite.

It seems like a TON of people are begging for help. Even those (like me) who have taken the test are lost and confused...and even angry. I HOPE SBEC reads these posts!!! YOUR TEST SUCKS!
Randy - Tuesday, December 6, 2005 01:57:27 PM
I agree with Jim. Some tests, like the PPR, seem to be impossible to study for. Not only that, but many of those questions are horribly written or have "real life" answers that aren't listed. It just seems out of touch with reality. Maybe it should be written by REAL educators.
David - Saturday, December 10, 2005 08:45:26 PM
Took Social Studies Composite again---they changed the test. Some of the same questions; but they added some more. This test cant be written by teachers--t is no way....they need to get a life or a real job.....because the objectives are not tested on the exam as much as it is a test on "what" you think is the BEST answer....it is ridulous....no wonder people are failing it.....
Joseph Ferguson - Tuesday, December 13, 2005 08:32:56 PM
David is totally right. This test is absolutely ridiculous. If they wanted teachers so ly then why would they make the test the way they do. I am sure I did not pass so I am looking for any help possible. Please email me at josephferguson@hotmail.com if any can help.

As someone who took the test recently, I can tell you FIRSTHAND that this test AND the PPR is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E!!! Do what you must, and do whatever you can because these tests will haunt your dreams if you're not on the ball. The PPR (in my opinion) is un-study-able. They are all situational questions that could be answsered any number of ways. T are no dates, no names, no phrases to remember or memorize. It's written ly (obviously not by real teachers!) and was a real pain to study for. Best wishes!!!

I am taking the SS test this week. In order to help me prepare I went to a used book store and bought 5 old AP guides (Govt, World, US Hist, Geog, Economics) and went through all of those tests as well as material I needed to review. Now for the last two weeks I have hung out at Barnes and Nobel and I am taking all of the sample tests in every prep- guide I can get my hands on. I figure when all is said and done I will have pre-tested over 2500 questions....odds are that should cover the 120 on the test.

I took the SS Composite 8-12 on 2/18/06 and was totally perplexed at some of the questions and subsequent answers. It is a ridiculous test and my version was weighted very heavily in economics. How in the hell do you study for this thing which I really want to pass? I spent three months ing over everything but did not study economics in-depth because they said that econ was a very minor part of the exam and surprise, surprise. I'm waiting for the results of the test on March 10th but I am not optimistic at all. The test didn't have any real references to historical facts or any data that you would expect a test like that to have. How do they evaluate your knowledge of history if they don't test you on that subject? I would like to know who the idiots that write these tests are because they belong doing something and it sure as hell isn't writing tests. Is anyone out t forming a study group or anything for the next test? I would like to be a part of it if t is anything planned. My email is dvdvaldez@yahoo.com and I teach ESL at Connally High in Pflugerville. Thanks, David Ames Valdez
Almost Passed - Friday, March 10, 2006 06:46:30 PM
Despite all of SBEC's efforts, I ALMOST passed despite taking the test in a record 48 minutes. Although t were only a few economic questions on my test, I was surprised by the number of "culture" questions. You know, questions like "What are the people of Peru like?" Too many of those. I t a total score of 236 (240 minimum to pass) in ***48*** minutes. WOO HOO!!!
Jason - Friday, March 10, 2006 07:00:34 PM
It is not how fast you take it but the effort you put into it by taking your time and reading the questions. I just hit a 278 on it on a first time testing because I took my time. Hell, I paid $100 I'm nna give my best effort and reread every question three times. Once again I suggest you use AP prep books to study with, if you can ace those questions you can ace this test...my results World History 18 of 21 correct (took 10 AP practice tests) US History 24 of 26 correct (took 12 AP practice tests) Government 15 of 16 correct (took 8 AP practice tests) Economics 15 of 16 correct (took 4 AP practice tests) Geography 13 of 21 correct (took 2 AP practice tests) SS Foundations 18 of 20 correct You don't have to buy all the guides, just to a bookstore with a notepad, have a seat and take them. TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THE TEST!!! I went through and answered all of the questions I knew, then I went through and worked on the questions I wasn't sure of getting them down to at least a coin flip, then I went back through the whole test like I hadn't answered anything, then I took the test and went through it again as I filled in the scantron. Sure I took three hours with this method, but a 278 is the same as an 89% (when scaled). This is not me being boastful, I am just trying to giv some hints. AP PRACTICE TESTS ARE THE KEY!!!!!
Almost Passed - Saturday, March 11, 2006 04:48:09 PM
W do you find these tests? Are they online? Bookstores? Hopefully not $30 per test...I'm spending enough WASTING MY TIME with these lousy state tests.
bmoore - Saturday, March 11, 2006 05:27:27 PM
W can I find those AP Practice tests? bmoore@rgv.rr.com
Jason - Sunday, March 12, 2006 01:07:49 PM
Go to any bookstore and they have AP Study guides, each of these guides have review tests over each area inside and have full blown practice tests in the back. If you have a bookstore that allows you to "browse"(such as a "Barnes and Nobel" or "Borders") you simply take a notebook in with you and take the tests at the store and then grade them. All said and done I probably answered over 2000 "practice questions" and those I missed had the answers in the back. Most all subjects have multiple review guides (from Barron to Princeton to Kaplan) but I could only find one for Geography (hence my lowest score). How much does it help? My first World practice test I hit in the 50s, by the time I was done with my practice tests I was scoring in the low 80s and on the TExES I was 18 for 21 (86%). Good Luck.
Mike - Wednesday, March 15, 2006 09:42:45 PM
Jason...your approach sounds logical...brush-up on the testable 6 Domains by studing via AP Study Guides. In fact, I checked Amazon and Ebay, and they have AP Study Guides for all the domains, except Social Studies. You can get all the AP Study Guides and shipped to your home for less than $50. One question, I understand, one doesn't need to focus on historical dates or key people, right? Sounds like it's writen like the PPR w logic is an absolute...eliminate the two possible answers that are fairly obvious, and, then, focus on the other two possible answers...and use logic to pick the better of the two. Any other insight would be appreciated.
Jason - Thursday, March 16, 2006 11:21:07 PM
Mike...your right. You can't really study for the SS methods part of the test...that is basically logic. The key is to match up the domains with the AP guides. As I stated above the way I took the test was the first round through ONLY answer questions I knew 100% locked or to eliminated options I knew were 100% wrong. Then I went back through and focused on the questions I was unsure of. The logic to this method is by only answering the questions I knew first I would build up confidence in myself and also maybe spark a memory of some of the others I was unsure of. The key is to take as much time as you want. They give you four hours, so why not use them (I used three). As far as buying the guides you may want to that to read the reviews but to the bookstore and hit those practice tests of the other books.

I own 104 "History" related books. I've been studying Govt/Economics for 12 years. My favorite three channels are History, Discovery, and Wings. I have published 4 articles and DOUBLE majored in Poli Sci and History. Why can't I pass this test?
Melissa - Wednesday, March 22, 2006 02:25:07 PM
I am taking the TExEs English & SS 4-8 on April 8th and I am scared to death! I found on-line a study guide called TExES Secrets @www.mo-media.com it claims it will bring up your scores dramatically by giving you tricks never before revealled and it is gauranteed. Have any of you heard of this product and if so did it help or is it bogus?
Mike - Thursday, March 23, 2006 05:40:09 PM
Melissa...don't purchase it...I did a few years a and I didn't find it very helpful. I thought it would help with the PPR, but it didn't. I past the PPR the first time, and found the PPR to be more of a logic test then any other test I've taken. I take the 8-12 SS this June 10th, and in the process of studying test questions--as Jason recommended above--and finding these questions are written similar to the PPR questions...another logic test...wby, you need to have general knowledge of the subject material, but the greatest challenge is being logical in how you approach answering the questions. In other , you must eliminate answers that don't logical match the question; then, analysis the remaining answers-- usually gets you down to two--then, take your time to assess how the answers relate to the question being asked. And, TAKE YOUR TIME while analyzing and running your logic. At first the question may not make sense, but as you continue to look at the question and possible answers, and as you become comfortable with the test, it's amazing how your mind will relax and the light bulb will on...in most cases. And, the more you practice working test questions, the better you get at answering them. Good luck on the April 8th...let us know how it es.
Diana - Saturday, March 25, 2006 12:30:18 PM
Melissa I agree with Mike. After purchasing from mo-media I demanded my money back. They were quick to respond and I was pleased with that. However one site is great: getcertifiedtexes.com. It helped me raise my score 25 points and I passed my Texes Life Science. I ordered the PPR 8-12 from them just in case ( I have been told PPR is easy) but I don't want to take any chances.

Their "never before revealed secrets" are things that I already knew! I printed up the free study guide and test from www.texes.nesinc.com. An advisor at the Alternative Certification School that I am enrolled at told me that that test was a pretty od comparison to the real exam. |

I have finally passed!!! After 4 attempts you would think I had the test memorized. I kept missing the test by 4 to 2 points...that REALLY crushed me. After my last failure I found this site and read every entry. I took the advice of the gentleman that suggested the AP practice books (I bought two of them in each subject area). I read and took the tests over and over. I preferred taking he tests at home because I thought my concentration would be deterred at the mall and I wanted to be able to study at any time. I really think this is what helped me. I now have all of the books and would be glad to pass them along...I am thinking about ebaying them.

I just took the exam and passed with a 242 out of a minimum of 240. I too thought the test was quite difficult, but not impossible. I have taught social studies for 6 years now, and needed to take the exam for social studies (8-12). I didn't really study much. But, as many of the other people have stated, if you can get into study groups and push to learn the materials that would help you out. If you can get AP books social studies that would also be a benefit. AP books do a brief but thorough review of historical facts. I wish all of you the best of luck. Take your time, for you will need it for this exam. It took me 3 hours to do it. Don't rush, and don't tell yourself 'I know I am ing to fail th is'. YOU CAN DO IT!
